The Best Licorice Ever, according to Klepper & Klepper. Now, you might think: of course Klepper & Klepper consider their own licorice to be the best – it’s their own creation, like how your own baby is always the most beautiful in the world. That’s just how it works. But… actually, everyone seems to agree with Klepper & Klepper.
IT ALL STARTED AS ANNIVERSARY LICORICE
Since Valentine’s Day 1990, Klepper Sr. has been running a candy stall at the market in Alkmaar. Over the years, he got to know exactly what his customers (a good reflection of the Dutch population) liked. So when Klepper Sr. celebrated 25 years at the market in 2015, he decided to surprise his customers with a special anniversary licorice – to give away for free.
Klepper Sr. recalled a licorice that wasn’t quite right because it was too moist, yet people kept asking for it. With that recipe in mind, Klepper & Klepper went to work. To make the licorice drier, they removed the gluten and gelatin. After a few weeks of experimenting, they were satisfied – the anniversary licorice was born.
THE SUCCESS OF THE BEST LICORICE EVER
The anniversary licorice was such a hit that people kept asking for it. That’s when Klepper Jr. had an idea: we can create a real licorice brand out of this. Since this licorice was a) considered by many to be the tastiest licorice ever and b) gluten- and gelatin-free, Klepper & Klepper decided to call it The Best Licorice Ever.
Slowly but surely, The Best Sweet Licorice Ever found its way into premium specialty stores across the Netherlands. More and more people discovered its rich, sweet taste, pleasant size, and satisfying texture.
THE BEST LICORICE EVER IN OTHER FLAVORS
Two years later, Klepper & Klepper developed The Best Salty Licorice Ever, made with real Celtic sea salt. In the words of Felix Wilbrink, culinary journalist at De Telegraaf (A well-known Dutch newspaper) : “This licorice unfolds immediately in your mouth; the flavor is almost creamy, the licorice melts quickly, barely sticks, with the perfect balance of sweet and salty. Soft, yet firm. This is how licorice becomes delicious again.”
A year later, The Best Honey Licorice Ever was introduced, made with real Dutch honey. De Telegraaf called it the best honey licorice in the Netherlands: “Soft, with an authentic honey flavor. delightful!”
At the end of 2020, Klepper & Klepper developed The Best Bay Leaf Licorice Ever, infused with pure bay leaf oil. In 2022, The Best Spicy Salty Licorice Ever followed. A licorice with a bold Umami kick, crafted with seaweed.
As if that wasn’t enough, in May 2024, Klepper & Klepper introduced The Best Coffee Licorice Ever, where the rich flavors of coffee and licorice perfectly complement each other.
